The one where TB and I go camping (ish)
I have always said that I couldn’t wait until TB was old enough to go camping with me… and how much fun it would beand all the fun things we would etc etc etc.
Then last night I kinda sort of had my wishes come true…
Mum had promised TB he’s get him a tent so he could have sleep overs in his bedroom and go camping with me… Yesterday, of all days, she came for a visit… and brought the tent.
Well that’s fine and cool and all I started planning a camping trip for me and TB then she gave him the idea of camping outside in the garden…
Up until then I said fine… he can go and sleep in his sleeping bag and have a walkie talkie with him in any emergency case… I spend most of the night awake anyway I can simply stay on the computer and get some work done til he either gives up and comes inside or well… calls me on the Walkie Talkie. He had a sleeping bag, pillows… a flashlight… what could go wrong right?
Right??????
Well… the wife HAD to go and guilt me into considering that that was his first time camping… and what if he was scared.. and she was worried about him being outside on his own… and it would be a good bonding experience… etc etc etc…
So yeah… I ended up going out there and sleeping in the tent too…
Don’t take me wrong… I love camping… But for me it is all about the whole experience… prepping to go… packing things on the car… getting to the campsite and putting the tents up in the best place… the walk or the hike that comes with it… sooking up and seeing the stars… campfire stories… the works… THAT is camping for me… the whole package… what we did last night was… sleeping in a tent.
Wouldn’t have been so bad if the tent was designed for 2 people… but TB’s tent is made for ONE adult to sleep on it… So yeah… it was kinda cramped in there… That and I found out that The Boy had my sleeping bag and had left me HIS to sleep in… a tight fit… and it was windy… and I think it rained at some point too…
At about 3 AM TB finally realized that I was in the tent… But then again only because he had unzipped the sleeping bag because he flet too hot… and now he was cold…
I very cleverly convinced him that he would be warmer if he slept in his own sleeping bag and let me have mine… which it is true(ish) as they are both pretty much the same… appart from the fact that TB’s was making me claustrophobic as it is quite… ummm tight. And mine is wide and spacey… so we switched and everyone was happy…
Or at least as happy as can be…
At about 4am I heard noises outside and something animal sized thumped against the tent… I still don’t know if it was a cat, a squirrel, a fox or a rabbit… but it managed to wake me up… I felt like I should go out and check what it was as it moved around the garden almost noiselessly – incredible how when you ar in a tent at night all noises around you seem to amplify so much- but then I though better and couldn’t be bothered… it was cold… the tent walls were wet… condensation methinks… and I was warm and cozy inside the sleeping bag… went back to sleep until about 5AM when I heard noises in the house… The Wife Noisily blowing her noise… Lil One crying… and I couldn’t really sleep anymore… too bright… so I took the walkie talkie and radioed home hoping The Wife would hear it and answer. SHE DID!!!!
“You think is safe enough for me to go inside now??” I asked
“Yeah… if you want…” She said
I didn’t have to think twice… I asked TB if he wanted to stay or come and he said he’s stay and enjoy his “house” and that he would sleep there every night until school started again.
5 Minutes later he Walkie Talkied me…
“Daaaad… I need to pee and the zipper is stuuuuuck pleeease help meee… hurry up!!!”
I went to save him… he got in, went to the toilet an straight to his bed… As in upstairs… in his warm and comfy bed in his bedroom… It is now nearly 11am and he’s still solid asleep… bless him…
And I’m up…
Coffee anyone???

A very cute story. I’m not much of a camper but I can see your point about camping in the back yard. If you’re not making smores or roasting marshmallows then what’s the point?
Have a great day and thanks for the smiles,

Hell yeah you are! Had any doubt about that??? But don;t worry I can put the bigger one up and you Vic, Oli and Tommy have a camping sleepover out there while me and Jon stay in to play Videogames!
I love that story!! I agree with you; camping is no fun if you can’t hike first and burn so many calories that you just crash … if I haven’t done that, I have a really hard time sleeping on the ground!
