My kids are my pride and joy and I tend to broadcast every single one of their little milestones and pearls over the internet for everyone to see, be it on twitter, Facebook, my blog or whatever means I am favouring at the day. He is no stranger to computers either, at 6 years olf he has his own favorites folder and even uses google to search for subjects he finds interesting (usually lego, star wars or club penguin related things).
They have been blogged about every since they were born, and let’s put it like that, all of us parent bloggers do share the whole of their lives for the world to see. With TB it has been no different. His mum is a blogging addict, being a blogger is one of the biggest parts in my lif too and so is Hales… Hell even my parents are having a go at blogging…
Considering that every single adult that holds importance in his life is, in one way or another, doing it… I wasn’t very surprised when he came to me today and said:
Daddy, I want you to build me a website so I can write things on it every day!
When I asked him if he didn’t think he was too young for it he looked into my eyes and said:
“Daddy, I am almost 7 years old! Even B (one of his school friends) has a website! You have one, mummy has one, Hayley has one… don’t you think I should have one too?”
Although I would worry about his safety, and WHAT he ends up putting there and all that I can’t argue with his logic… I mean he IS NEARLY 7 YEARS OLD *sniggers*.
I haven’t given him an answer yet. I said I would think and let him know next week… The fact is that I AM tempted to let him have it… IF I can make sure his posts can be kept secret and I can have parental control over it all… There are ways of doing it… I’m just not completely sure… I would love to know what goes on in his head…
How young is to young after all… Kids ar so much more mature nowadays…
What do you think???? Would you let your kid enter the blogosphere at 7 years of age? Is that old enough? What would be the limits you would impose??? I would REALLY love to know what you think about that… so please… Comment away!!!

Would you let your kid have his/her own blog at the age of 7? I’d REALLY know your opinion on that! comment here: http://urbanvox.net/wordpress/2011/03/ho…
@urbanvox no!
just… no??? not even allowing the the vote of confidence???
I think it’s too young. Innocence should be allowed to be innocent. There is too much on the internet that would despoil innocence – including people who would comment.
But there are ways around that aren’t there? a 7 year old’s blogging can and probably will be innocent leaving it to it’s own devices… and as to people commenting… well… it can be moderated… I just think that supervision is the key… and if grownd rules are folloews… well… why not?!?!?!?!
My 7 year old daughter has had her own blog for a couple of months. She knows the ground rules: no names, no recent recognisable photographs… I have the final editorial say on anything and she can’t post without me being there. All comments are moderated and come to my inbox and so far nothing untoward in any of them.
Good to teach them about being safe online whilst expressing their own opinions and learning IT skills!
I absolutely LOVE that view!!!! it comes to show that you can be safe with that… and still encourage the kiddo to go ahead with his/her own projects… It also specially means to me that I can know what goes on on my son’s life in a daily basis as I am not there tho know it… and THAT is one of the most important things to me to the dat… Ground rules FTW!
Thanks for the comment! inspirational!! Makes me believe it can be done.
My 8 yo has been blogging at school since he was 7 via a school blogging service. He doesn’t do it often and he wishes he could.I’m thinking of letting write posts on my blog occasionally to gain practice before having his own blog.I wouldn’t let him ever have his own blog until he is in secondary school. He needs to understand the dangers as well technological know how before that happens.
Guest posts sound like a sensible solution… Will have a chat with him about that…

Maybe setting him up with a moderated account so I can have control over it… ummm ideas ideas…
Than you!
I think at that age, well at any age really, it’s good to journal (if that’s what we’re talking about here). I just don’t think it’s good to put it all out to the world. Once it’s out there it’s out there. It takes knowledge and experience of the world to know how that represents you and by the time your able to make that judgement the world already has access to your mind. Dangerous.
it’s more like a way of expression oneself than journalling…
but I agree… security comes first… and I would REALLY not feel comfortable if I couldn’t moderate it…
Fancy a good read??: How Young Is Too Young? http://urbanvox.net/wordpress/2011/03/ho… #uvhq

No. Buy him a nice diary and a pen. Same ability to express oneself, no security worries
he has one already… now he wants something express outside the box… I’m happy to letting him guest post in my blog… where I can keep an eye on him… til I’m convinced he is old or mature enough to have his own… if he still wants to blog then…
