Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Stories… We all have them… Once or twice in our lives there are events that drastically change who we are and how we will react to a certain situation in the future again… We are in a way defined by the decisions we take and by decions that other people takes that come to affect our lives as well as their own.

We all have fears and crutches that we use to protect us against them. We act to avoid things we are afraid that could happen to us again before they develop and we end up not giving a chance for people we love to prove that things CAN be different because we are so scared they won’t.

That is part of our human condition.

In another extreme we try to avoid suffering today by holding on to good memories.

We tend to remember and hold on to these memories of how good things used to be. They make us happy… but at the same time those memories of happier times can be so painful at the same time because in a way we know it is not today… We forget that Life is NOT static. Change is the only thing we can take for certain… People will be born and die, will get married and divorced, some will move away and other will simply lose touch with us. Few things remain with us throughout the years… And even those things go through a state or another of change.

Situations change… people change… every single thing that happens to you will change you at least an inch in the way you were walking. Things are never going to be how they were… But we still hold on to how things used to be… We still hold on to the memories (good and bad ones) of things that happened to us in the past.

We have no guarantees about tomorrow… If you don’t do the best you can today you will have missed the great things you have in storage for you today. We try to avoid things that happened to us yesterday and not make the same “mistakes” again to have a better tomorrow and before you realise, tomorrow has become yesterday and has passed you right by while you worried about it.

We tend to live and relive these old memories in our minds. They make us smile and soothe us when we need them. Would you go back there if you could?

For a long time I was VERY certain that my answer would be yes. After all would be great to simply rewind time and be back to the good ones and well, if you can… why not make sure you didn’t correct one thing you think you did wrong?

Do you believe that your best years are behind you?

Right now I rather believe that my best days are still ahead of me… Is that wrong? Well, not… but then again… you are looking at tomorrow and forgetting again that making the best of TODAY will ensure you have the best tomorrow… not looking forward for better days to come.

Did you ever stop to think about how much much energy you waste remembering things how they were? Or wishing you had done something differently?

We hold on to how things were so fiercely that our arms aren’t free to embrace today.

The best day of your life is today… We have the power to make the best day of our lives today and by doing that we realize that we can only look forward to tomorrow because we will do the same again, maybe in 200 different ways but still the best we can.

But you need to let go of yesterday to be able to embrace now, today.

Is that too hard to understand? It took me so long of me trying too hard to make sure tomorrow will be bright that I have neglected today so badly that I have screwed up my immediate tomorrow… My grandma used to tell me not to leave for tomorrow what you can do today… and know what? Now I see how right she was.

It’s never too late tho… I have loads I need to fix today… It is a difficult path to take, I’m not gonna lie to you, but I have decided to set a stone to mark my first step and make sure I make of today the best I can. To stop holding on to how things were, and stop worrying of how they will be, to focus on what I can have and do today. And well… If I make things right, There might even be a new chance for life to be not like it used to be, like I’ve been dreaming and praying for so far,  but better than they ever were, and on the right path to be even better tomorrow.

Accept the past for what it is. Celebrate  yesterday for what it was, if you need to grieve, then grieve, but then let go… Learn to  leave the past in the past… you can’t change it… FORGIVE what needs to be forgiven  and make amendments if you are the one that needs forgiveness. Then set a stone on the path and take your first step. May you be ready to receive now, TODAY.

What do YOU need to let go of? What do you need to make sure today is the best day of your life? What do you need to change today so that tomorrow doesn’t pass you by?
