#366Project Week 5

I have succumbed to the pressure of busy times and busy days and all that… I simply don’t have the time I thought I had to look for a shoot, edit and post every day… so a little compromise has to be made… and I will now be posting my 366 Project photos once a week, every Sunday.

This weeks photos are particularly awesome… :)

I need to start of course with Luschka’s (from Diary of a First Child) Pregnancy shoot!

It was great to seeing them all again – and long overdue – and K’s smile as she said “Hi Uncle Yuri!” and gave me a hug was just priceless! I can’t wait for Squiggly to be around and we’re planning for me to do a New Born Shoot as well so watch this space. ;-)

It was LOADS of fun for everyone and the result was just spectacular (and I am forgetting all modesty here… hehehe). I’ll dedicate a whole blog post to the shoot later, but I just think t least a couple of the photos should be included this week ;-)

Next in the list of awesome was Big Monkey’s Spontaneous Combustion snap.

Don’t be alarmed… I did not cover him in petrol and light a match on him… hehehehe…

Little Monkey found a glow stick and brought it to the bath with him… Big saw it and when it was his turn for bath time he brought another 2 with him and asked me to turn the lights off… now THAT gave me an idea… I lowered my shutter speed and clicked away… the result is what you see… AWESOME OR WHAT??? ;-)

And then… FROM fire to ICE…

Well… Snow… And Snow Troopers (LEGO!!!)…  And Birds… And fruits… and Slush…

And under special Request even a Tauntaun!!!!!

So… That’s it for this week’s 366 Project photos… I hope you enjoyed them… Stay tuned for more next week… and Carpe Diem… Every Diem!!!! ;-)

Aupair #366Project Day 25

A couple of months ago I did some portfolio photos for an Austrian model called Anna Salminen. I’ve been dying to know what she thinks of the final product for a little while and now I finally get to show the photos.

The theme of he photos is a littler darker and more adult than what I usually do, but it was INCREDIBLE fun to make them and we had loads of laughs setting up the shoot and maling sure she was serious for most of them… Yeah… Not easy to do when we are both laughing hard of one thing or another.

I’ve uploaded some of the photos to Flickr and you can see them here  . The one on top is one of my favourite ones… It also has a meaning… sometimes we choose not to see what is right in front of us… Choice… is such an interesting little thing, huh?!?!

;-)

Carpe Diem!

Photog Porn – 50mm

So… I’ve been wanting to get myself some 50mm lenses for a wee while now… But like the iPad (which I am still trying to convince myself that would be a necessity in order to justify getting one) I just couldn’t justify investing the £100 (min) to get one when I have a perfectly functioning 18-80mm that can technically do the same thing and more…

So… WHY get 50mm lenses??? I mean… is superfluous and all that… right?!?! RIGHT??? RIIIIIGHT???

Wrong!

And for the 1st time in ages I am actually HAPPY for being proved wrong and actually really need to thanks the Lovely people at John Lewis for sending me what is now one of my favourite toys EVER: a Canon 50mm, f/1.8 II.

Yes… I’ve been playing with it for about a month now and I now realise that a 50mm lens is a must have in the kit of anyone that wants to actually be serious about photography…

And forget the fact that 50mm lenses mimic the field of the human eye (did you know that that is why is also called “normal lenses”??) which means that what you see in your viewfinder is pretty close to what you would be able to capture with your own eyes… Forget the tact that they are way faster then the usual 28-80mm “consumer lens” that most retailers will try to push you when buying your kit, or forget the fact that they are smaller and cheaper than the bigger ones everyone loves to get (me included)…

The fact is that they are INCREDIBLY more fun to play with… It just feels a lot more creative to do things the way the pros used to do it in the old times… back to the roots and all that…

Yes… you don’t have the facility of having a zoom… but that’s why you have a camera with interchangeable lenses anyways right?! And maybe is a little harder to stabilise the camera to avoid shaky/blurry photos, but that is solved with a tripod or using a suport to steady up your arms… simplez…

So I spent a whole weekend snapping pictures around the rent’s place in Darbyshire (you can see my favorite photos of the set here) and my verdict is definitely: HOW THE HELL did I survive without one for so long? (okay… maybe that is exaggerating a little, but once you get one you are hooked… seriously…)

I’ve been told the 50mm is great to do street photos… And I have seen that they are perfect for low light photos which is also a HUGE plus as I simply hate taking flash photos…

So… if you are stil considering what to give yourself (or the photog in your life) what Xmas pressie to get (and still don’t have a 50mm lens, that is surely the one gift to consider getting.

AH!!!! Keep an eye open at urbanvox[dot]net for more tips, tutorials and Photography challenges coming up and there are a couple of contests coming up too… so stay tuned!!!

Life is so repetitive… But it is our duty to make it FUN!

Enjoy!

Photography for kids: tips and tools

With soft light, low sun and a rich colour palette to play with, autumn is a great time of year to introduce your kids to photography – guest blogger Joe Bond offers advice on how to go about it.

Birds sing. Fish swim. Kids play… right? That’s why photography is a great activity for kids. It’s playful because it’s experimental by nature – you can learn an awful lot just by trying different things. Whether shooting from upon high, or crouching down in the long grass – entrusting kids with options and getting them to think about what interests them makes photography fun, and quite grown-up.

While you can now buy durable digital cameras specifically designed for kids, with robust rubber shells and bright coloured buttons, they tend to sacrifice on photo quality and are only about ten or twenty pounds on average cheaper than a compact digital camera. There’s no reason to keep your camera out of reach of your kids if they’re being supervised, although you might want to attach the cheaper lens to your SLR camera if you’ve got one.

What’s great about digital cameras is that you can hold your child’s attention by attaching the device to your regular or internet TV screen and look at the pictures together. Having such instant feedback is great for learning photography skills super quick – and carrying on the experiment.

Alternatively, you could always buy a cheap disposable camera for them to start with. Remember them? You don’t have to worry if they break, and there’s still all the excitement of getting the roll developed. With a limited amount of photos, they demand a little more thought as to what goes into each one.

When it comes to what to shoot, there’s plenty of fun to be had playing with perspective and shadows. These are concepts which are familiar to adults but can be new discoveries for children. Cutting out a frame from some cardboard can encourage your youngsters to think about photos before they take them, and to experiment with different angles and types of composition.

Photography is a great activity to get them out and about: for once the digital revolution doesn’t have to be about sitting inside staring at a TV screen, but can involve a walk in the park or a trip further afield. Then when you’re back home, you can pick your favourite photos and add borders and effects to them with free online tools such as PhotoFactory and Picknik – letting them get hands-on with your PC, Mac or iPad 2 and in the process learning even more creative technological skills.

What happens when you give your camera to the little ones?

Inspiration

I have been busy taking pretty pictures last Sunday and in a nice brake from studios/indoors photos I’ve managed to book  the two shoots I had for the weekend using the Wimbledon Common as locacation.

I did some Pin-up photos there before with Lottie (from LottieLoves.com) based on what was sort of planned for the photos I thought it would make sense. One of them was a Fun. light-hearted Family Portrait with Emma and her parents that were visiting her in London. I think I might have had just as much fun doing the photos as they had climbing on trees etc for me to take the shots (thanks guys… you were awesome).

The second shoot was a bit more adult oriented doing some profile photos for an Austrian Dominatrix. I have to say it was… well… somewhat interesting doing them… LOL! (I might post some of the photos later after I get them through Photoshop).

There is no other way to say it how much I love being behind a camera… I am AWFUL at focusing in one thing at the time… but  for those few minutes I am clicking away I forget everything else… The 2000000000 things that are always boiling in my head disappear and there is just that… And is incredibly peaceful too…

I talk a lot about how it is important to make life fun in this blog… But so far THAT is the best description I could find for it. For me THAT is fun and I try to make sure my subjects feel the same way too (photos are always a lot better when you enjoy what you are doing)…

Sometimes all it takes is a couple of hours in a day doing something you love to do to give you that little boost of energy and inspiration that you need to face a week you know for sure will be a hard one…

Now bring it on week ahead… I am definitely ready for ya! ;-)

I’d love to know… What inspires YOU?!?!?

Hope you have a great one ahead too!
